QGallery presents Phantasm, a solo exhibition by Jamil Huseynov, an immersive project in which the image relinquishes its passive role as an object of contemplation and instead asserts itself as an active force of affect.
Phantasm emerges as a state after the gaze, at the moment when the visual contact with the image has already dissolved, yet the image persists within the viewer, transmuting into tension, sensation, and an internalized response. The exhibition is conceived precisely within this territory, beyond the visible, within the space of after-perception.
Jamil Huseynov’s practice unfolds at the boundary between the real and the imaginary, where the image loses its function of representation and acquires subjectivity. His works do not simply depict; they activate states of perception. What emerges are not scenes, but structures - configurations in which form gestures toward meaning without ever fully containing it.
The artist develops a visual language in which surreal imagery is stripped of ornamentation and functions as a tool of inner impact. A particular importance in the artist’s practice is given to the sustained engagement with mirrors as a generative device. In the process of creating his works, Jamil Huseynov employs varied reflective surfaces to dislocate perspective, fracture the image, and destabilize visual coherence. This method allows the artist to move beyond direct observation and work with an intermediate state between reality and its reflection. The resulting image carries an internal disjunction: familiar forms lose their fixity, and perception itself becomes provisional, subject to hesitation and revision.
Figures within Huseynov’s compositions do not perform narrative roles; instead, they confront the viewer in a mode of direct, almost insistent address. This encounter unfolds in silence, yet is charged with a palpable intensity. Here, the image is no longer that which is seen, but that which returns the gaze.
Distance is systematically dismantled: the act of looking becomes implicated, absorbed, and redirected. Within this charged field, the condition of the phantasm emerges - a presence that resists stabilization yet exerts undeniable force.
The pervasive sense of solitude within the works is devoid of overt dramatization. It extends, accumulates, lingers - like a suspended pause in which meaning does not dissipate but condenses. This solitude does not enclose; rather, it sharpens the desire for response - for an answer that remains perpetually out of reach within the coordinates of ordinary reality.
As the artist notes, his works are an attempt “to breathe into images those states and sensations absent from lived reality,” to construct a presence capable of resonance, empathy, and inward reflection.
Phantasm invites the viewer not to observe, but to enter - to inhabit a space where perception becomes an act, and the image assumes the role of a subject, initiating an experience that unfolds within the viewer.
