Fannie Leow: Weaving Heritage Through Contemporary String Art

Singapore-based artist Fannie Leow is redefining the language of string art through a practice rooted in patience, precision, and cultural storytelling. Her works move beyond decorative form, transforming threads into layered narratives that bridge tradition and modern expression.

From Corporate Creativity to Meditative Craft

After more than a decade in the corporate creative industry, Leow found her true artistic calling in string art — a slow, meditative process that rekindled her love for hands-on craftsmanship and strengthened her connection to family and heritage. What began as a personal exploration soon evolved into a disciplined artistic practice where every nail and thread is placed with intention.

Fann Art Thérapie: Where Tradition Meets Mindfulness

Working through her studio, Fann Art Thérapie, Leow explores themes of culture, nature, and mindfulness. Her approach reflects the values embedded in traditional crafts, particularly batik, which strongly influences her work. Like batik, her string art relies on repetition, care, and precision, allowing meaning to emerge gradually through layered detail rather than instant visual impact.

Threads of Tradition: From Silk to String

One of her notable works, Threads of Tradition: From Silk to String, draws inspiration from the iconic Singapore Airlines batik motif. Reinterpreted through the precision of string art, the piece pays homage to a cherished cultural symbol while offering a contemporary perspective. The ten native flowers that inspired the original motif are subtly woven into the composition, creating depth, movement, and rhythmic flow.

Rather than replicating heritage, Leow re-contextualizes it — demonstrating that cultural identity can evolve while preserving its essence. Her work positions tradition not as a static reference, but as a living dialogue between past and present.

Global Recognition and Media Feature

Leow’s artistic practice was featured in Indacy Media Global Magazine, Vol. 1, Issue 2 (August 2025), highlighting her contribution to contemporary craft-led art and reinforcing her growing international visibility.

Upcoming Exhibition: World Art Dubai -April 23- 26, 2026

Continuing her global trajectory, Fannie Leow will exhibit at World Art Dubai presented via First Wish Art Gallery at its booth within the UK Section. First Wish Art Gallery will be represented across three stands — Z4 (H10), Z4 (H09), and Z4 (J03).

Leow’s works will be showcased at one of these stands, further positioning her practice within a prominent international art fair context and expanding the dialogue between Southeast Asian heritage and global contemporary art platforms.

Slowing Down Through Art

Through her meticulous process, Leow invites viewers to pause, observe detail, and reconnect with a slower rhythm of making. Her artworks function not only as visual compositions, but as thoughtful conversations — between craft and innovation, heritage and reinvention, mindfulness and modern life.

In an era driven by speed and immediacy, Fannie Leow’s string art stands as a deliberate counterpoint: intentional, reflective, and deeply rooted in cultural memory.

Fannie Leow’s latest artworks will be showcased at WORLD ART DUBAI 2026, presenting her unique exploration of heritage and contemporary string art.
